Project Title
One Man Can – Preventing Men’s Use of Violence in Southern Africa
The Organisation
Geographic Location
Diepsloot, Johannesburg, South Africa
Summary of Intervention / Research
Sonke Gender Justice’s flagship programme, One Man Can, is an existing multi-level intervention that engages men in confronting harmful aspects of masculinity and as partners in addressing gender-based violence and HIV and AIDS, with the ultimate goal of achieving gender equality. We have proposed to refine Sonke’s existing gender-transformative programme by adding community mobilisation and advocacy. By adding to the existing, more conventional group-based workshop approach, we are aiming to address the multi-level nature of VAWG and create an enabling environment for men to embrace more equitable forms of masculinity. Given the strong associations between masculinities and men’s use of VAWG, now is an opportune moment to refine the model so that it targets men’s VAWG behaviours.
- Sonke developed a novel Theory of Change that addresses risk factors for VAWG at individual, relationship, community and societal levels. This model includes: new findings that health-seeking and non-violence can be nurtured when men self-reflect and have space to rehearse new masculinity behaviours.
- Recognition that masculinities may influence men’s use of violence through multiple pathways: alcohol use, partner communication, mental health theories of community mobilisation for health promotion
The multi-level Sonke intervention is being evaluated using a cluster trial design through Wits University. In Diepsloot, neighbourhood “clusters” are randomly assigned to receive the intervention or a wait-list condition.
Major Timeframes
The project will run for 3 years from 2016 and end line results are expected in the last quarter of 2018
- A process evaluation will explore programme delivery and why participants may change.
