    Nepal | VSO International

    The One Community One Family project addresses factors related to migration in Nepal including the changing roles and identities of men and women in migrant communities that are seen to be driving a rise in VAWG. The project will provide migrant women with livelihood training and link them to microfinance institutions, and will work with the wider community to provide counseling, access to support services, and drive local advocacy activities.

What Works - Nepal

Intersections between traditional gender norms, women’s economic conditions and exposure to violence against women and girls: formative research in migrant communities of Baglung district, Nepal. This report summarises the findings of the formative research phase of the ‘Sammanit Jeevan’ project, based on qualitative field research conducted in two villages in the Baglung district of Nepal. The research focused on the following key areas:

  • Prevalent attitudes towards gender roles
  • Experiences of different forms of VAWG
  • Experience of male out-migration and the impact on young married women left behind
  • Existing services and response/support mechanisms for victims of VAWG
  • Assessing data on the prevalence and types of VAWG

A study exploring the nature of VAWG and its effects, the community response to VAWG, and the linkages between economic conditions and VAWG. This study looks at the dominant gender norms for each sex, the causes of household conflict, and the causes and different types of VAWG. It finishes with conclusions and recommendations.

32% of Nepal reproductive age women report lifetime emotional, physical, or sexual IPV. Yet what is missing in Nepal and elsewhere is understanding of the patterns of violent experiences. This study seeks to correct this by studying different types of IPV in Nepal, and in particular assessing the prevalence of each type of IPV by district and other covariates.
